How Long You Are Without the Door
Topanga sits 17 miles from our Manhattan Beach shop, and that distance is the first thing to plan around. We don't keep a truck staged in the canyon, so a same-day call here depends on where the crew already is on the schedule that morning. If your door is stuck open, we talk you through securing it over the phone before anyone drives out. If it's stuck shut and the car's trapped, that call gets priority routing, but we're not going to promise a window we can't hit from 17 miles away. Book ahead when you can. A spring that's making noise today and hasn't failed yet is a job we can schedule around the drive, not an emergency dispatch.
Parts We Carry
For 1971-era openers and track hardware, we carry the extension-spring cable kits, pulleys, and hinge sets that fail most often on doors of that age. Torsion conversion kits are on the truck too, since a fair number of Topanga owners upgrade when they replace a door rather than replicate the old extension setup. What we don't carry on every run is a match for an obsolete opener logic board or a discontinued panel style - those can mean a special order and a wait, and we'll tell you that up front rather than stall you at the door.
The DIY Question
Tightening a loose hinge or lubricating a track is fine to do yourself. Touching an extension spring under tension is not - those springs store enough energy to break a hand or worse, and on a 1971-built door the hardware holding them has had 50-plus years to fatigue. If your opener is cycling but the door won't move, check the manual release cord first; that's a common false alarm and costs nothing to rule out. Anything involving the spring, the cable, or the torsion bar is a call, not a weekend project, and given the drive out here, one call that covers the actual problem beats three that don't.
The Complications
The 17-mile drive means we schedule Topanga calls in blocks when we can, which sometimes pushes a non-urgent job a day or two rather than same-afternoon. If your door needs a part we don't stock on the truck - an obsolete panel, a specific opener board - that's a second trip, not a same-visit fix, and we'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. With 3,098 households in this stretch of the area, we're not out here daily the way we are closer to the shop, so a little lead time on booking helps more than it would in Manhattan Beach itself.
